Headlines

You will see later in this edition of the Sandprint, reports on the sporting successes that have been achieved this week. On Tuesday evening, the U16 boys football team won the County Cup. This is the most prestigious football trophy in Hertfordshire, and it is the second year running that a Sandringham team has won. It was a great game and dominated for most of the time by our team, who came away with a 2-1 win over a resilient Richard Hale School side. Well done to the team and a massive thank you to Mr Cracknell for coaching them so well. We also heard that our boys mixed double team won the county U18 tennis title, and the girls became County rounders champions. Well done everyone.

On Thursday, we celebrated the success of our lovely Year 13 students at their awards ceremony. The Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Marion Brown, and long-standing supporter of the school, Mrs Linda Randall were our special guests and presented the various awards. I would like to congratulate all our Year 13 for their efforts and achievements so far, and thank Mrs Mouncey, Ms Potter and all the staff who are involved with this year group over the years. Good luck in your forthcoming examinations.

Thank you to all our families for understanding the current situation of dispute with members of the NEU and the government over Teacher’s Pay and Conditions. On Thursday we managed to run the school for years 9, 11, 12 and 13. Next Tuesday we will be open for Years 7, 11, 12 and 13. We will continue to deliver remotely from those staff who are not on strike next Tuesday.

Finally, a massive thank you to everyone involved in our charity Rugby Match last week. We now have the final figures and we have managed to raise £2,584.80 for Youth Talk. David Barker, the CEO of Youth Talk has written to the school thanking us for the donations and we will visit their new premises in London Road soon, once it is open. Thank you again for your generosity.

SUPPORT FOR TEENS

Services for Young People have contacted us regarding a support group for boys ages 13-17. They meet every Wednesday (during term time) 18:00 until 20:00 at the Pioneer Young People’s Centre, Heathlands Drive, St Albans, AL3 5AY.  Boys can come, be themselves, ask questions and get support from a qualified member of staff. There are lots of fun activities on offer and with it coming into the warmer months plenty of opportunity to go outside and make use of the green spaces near the centre. If you have any other questions about Services for Young People or the project then please contact Philip.Munn@hertfordshire.gov.uk for more details.

ONLINE SAFETY NEWS: Gaming Guidance for parents/carers

Gaming is a hugely popular activity for the young people who attend our school, regardless of their age. Students tell us that they enjoy gaming for number of reasons, e.g., socialisation, coping mechanism, skill building and much more. Many games are not appropriate for all age groups, and we understand that for parents/carers it can be hard to understand what is and isn’t age appropriate. Internet Matters have put a guide together a guide on this matter which details some alternative games beyond the most popular ones and promoting health discussion about gaming as a family affair. This guide covers games across all PEGI age ranges. You can download the guide via think link here.

THEME WEEK: Armed Forces

The whole school theme for this week recognises the Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. There are many ways for people, communities and organisations across the country to show their support and get involved. The students received an excellent assembly that got them to reflect on the sacrifices that those in the armed forces make to support those in need in our country and around the world. We hope that all of our students are able to empathise with people living in countries that are currently being affected by conflict.

SEND NEWS 2- STARTING POST 16 EDUCATION

Hemel Hempstead's Young People's Centre is offering free sessions designed to help students feel more confident about the practical elements of starting a new course at College or Sixth Form. Their advisers will help prepare students and think about what will happen on the first days and weeks of the new term. They will be answering frequently asked questions and covering subjects such as travel, how to get support on a range of queries once at college or sixth form and study skills

These are informal small group sessions held across two days.  Anyone with a College or Sixth Form place for September who lives in the Dacorum or St Albans area is welcome, particularly those who have been out of education or are anxious or concerned about the transition.

MATHEMATICS NEWS

On Monday, Sandringham entered two teams of four students from Year 8 into Heat 1 of the Year 8 Mathematics Challenge. The Year 8 Maths Challenges are designed as informal, friendly inter-school competitions, designed to challenge young mathematicians.  They require excellent communication, problem-solving and team-working skills, as well as mathematical skill and insight.

Each challenge is divided into four equally-weighted rounds:

  • Round 1: General Maths questions
  • Round 2: Memory round
  • Round 3: Estimation round
  • Round 4: More general Maths questions

As these titles will suggest, success in the challenges relies on much more than mere mathematical calculation.  Many of the problems and activities are accessible to most year 8 students, not just higher attainers. The students faced opposition from 30 other teams from schools around Hertfordshire and I am delighted to report that the students performed very well finishing15th t and 5th in their heat.

Congratulations and well done to Oliver S, Erin R, Emma S, Finn N, Salma C, Daniel C, Charlie A, and Gabby R.

COMMUNITY NEWS: Sandringham Community Choir

Sandringham Community Choir currently has around 40 singers of all ages and backgrounds. There is no audition, and no need to be able to read music (though many have learnt to read it by singing in the choir!). All you need is an interest in learning to sing and make music with others. Although our aim is simply to enjoy singing together each week, we go carol singing for charity in December and usually put on a short concert in June or July. We sing music from across the centuries: from Bach, Mozart and earlier, via folksongs, spirituals and barbershop, to arrangements of classic jazz, rock and pop numbers.  The choir meets on Wednesday evenings 6.30-7.30pm during term time in the music department at Sandringham School. If you would like to find out more about the choir, just come along on to a Wednesday evening rehearsal and give it a go, or contact sanita.sharma@sandringham.herts.sch.uk. There is a small termly fee to cover the choir’s costs.

BOOK OF THE WEEK: Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.

Sephy is a Cross: she lives a life of privilege and power. But she's lonely, and burns with injustice at the world she sees around her. Callum is a nought: he's considered to be less than nothing - a blanker, there to serve Crosses - but he dreams of a better life. They've been friends since they were children, and they both know that's as far as it can ever go. Noughts and Crosses are fated to be bitter enemies - love is out of the question. Charlotte B 7 who has recently read the book says: 'This is a very interesting book. It shows the opposite sides of the two groups in society, and has lots of unexpected scenes. I really enjoyed it!'
