Parents and students in Year 9 and above may be interested in the virtual Watford Careers Fair taking place on Monday 9th November, 3.30-8.00pm. This week, students in Sustainability Club have been planting chives, cress, coriander and chilli seeds, as you can see in the picture below. The plants will be taken to grow in the food technology department to help educate students about home-grown foods. Meanwhile, thanks to a grant from Fo$$, a polytunnel and shelving has arrived and will be used by horticulture students in the school garden to grow vegetables. 

Year 7 Science Club this week made cartesian divers and the picture above shows them competing to make the ‘diver’ (a weighted pipette) sink as fast as possible!

The decision has been made to celebrate British Science Week in March 2022 with the theme of minimising our carbon footprint. We are making plans to organise a whole-school challenge: to see if we can have a carbon-neutral school day! Net zero itself might not be achievable given the need to use electricity, plus fuel for heating, but we certainly plan to involve the whole school community in producing as little CO2 as possible on that day. If any parents are able to offer expertise in this area then please get in touch.

You may have read the other week about Charles B in Year 10 who was going to the finals of the national UK boxing tournament on the 30th and 31st of October. Charles boxes for West Ham amateur boxing club London and was part of a nine strong team who all went through to the semi finals. Charles won his bout on Saturday in the semi finals and then went on to win the finals. He is now number one in the UK for his age and weight and is now part of the England boxing team. What an amazing achievement! If you would like to watch Charles' fights, they can be found on YouTube if you type in (England Boxing Junior Nationals 2021.) On day 1, Charles was fight 23 in Ring C and on day 2 he was fight 21 in Ring C. Well done Charles and good luck in your next match!

On Wednesday evening the Sandpit theatre was once again filled with the beautiful sound of music at our Autumn concert. This was our first time back in the theatre performing to a live audience after 18 months of virtual, hybrid and outdoor concerts, and the atmosphere was suitably celebratory. Many of our ensembles and choirs were represented at the concert which included sinfonia, concert band, jazz band, string group, percussion ensemble, junior choir, senior choir, show choir, soloists Julia B and Lucas H, and year 11 and 13 ensembles. The music performed was from a broad range of genres and styles and it was really clear to see how hard all the students had worked to prepare such a wonderful programme in only 7 weeks.

There were a large number of students involved across all year groups and it was so wonderful for our younger students to play alongside and be inspired by our more experienced musicians. As a faculty we have worked incredibly hard to re-build our extra-curricular provision this term after the challenges of the last 18 months and we would like to congratulate all who took part.

We look forward to our next large event in collaboration with the Arts Team on our whole school show ‘The Sound of Music’ later in November.

We are delighted to announce that Sandringham School has been awarded a GOLD SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) Award by the National SMSC Quality Mark and been asked by Young Citizens to be an SMSC Beacon School. The BeauSandVer Information Evening was held virtually last night for Year 11 students and parents. This was the first information provided about the Year 11 into the Sixth Form process and the presentation explains the offer and details about all three schools in the consortium. We will be providing further details about Post 16 options at the Year 11 Parent Information Evening next week, and in the Year 11 assembly. The main event for Sandringham Sixth Form is the Into the Sixth evening on 11th January 2022.

It is only a few weeks until the Whole School Show- The Sound of Music- and rehearsals are going well with students and staff working hard on the acting, singing, dancing and staging. The tech run will take place on the 14th November followed by dress rehearsals on the 15th, and the MAIN EVENT running from the 18th to 20th November. We are really proud of all of the students involved and want to say a big thank you to staff supporting them. It is set to be an amazing event- so don't forget to buy your tickets here for what is set to be an unforgettable performance. 

A student’s take by Ralph Whitworth (Year 12)

Generation Z is a generation used to empty promises. The Paris Climate Change Agreement of 2015 was one such empty promise. Signed by 196 countries, 184 national pledges were made - 75% of which are not deemed to be sufficient to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030, the target set by the agreement. With attitudes pessimistic as to whether even these insufficient goals will be reached, the landmark piece of international legislation, lauded for its historic success, feels to today’s youth like an adult’s poor attempt to pretend to be doing something. It’s like when you want to be let off chores because the homework is piling up but your parents simply say you can skip the dishes but not the laundry and everything else and then make a point of how generous they are.

 COP26 appears, sadly, to be faced with a similar kind of problem. It is evident now due to the clamour being made by scientists that even if everyone stuck to the Paris pledges it wouldn’t be enough, and with the effects of climate change becoming increasingly visible in everyday life tensions are higher than ever. So hopes for genuine change beyond these empty promises have become desperate. But things are already looking bleak. With Xi Jinping already neglecting to attend (president of a country that produces 27% of all global emissions), to the cynical youth of the 21st century it looks like posture politics and petty rivalries have doomed COP26 already.

Of course, defeatism is not the way forward, not least because it’s unproductive. And we don’t plan on sitting back and watching it all burn. The eyes of the youth are on Glasgow, and on the world leaders who will attend. But this time, attitudes have shifted. Rousing speeches, many of which will undoubtedly be made, will no longer be enough to satisfy us. We’ve had enough of rousing speeches which mean nothing. The legacy of COP26 will be far more important than what actually transpires there. We will no longer be satisfied with fancy words, now actions are everything.

 At Sandringham, the COP26 team in Year 12 has been doing its best to ensure that all eyes are on the conference. After all, world leaders are more likely to act if they know that the people will hold them accountable if they do not. Our team visited a COP26-themed event at Saint Saviour’s Church and has planned a week of awareness to make sure the whole school is behind us as we make our message clear: leaders of COP26, act against climate change, or be judged for your negligence. Having spent your entire life watching politicians fail to live up to their word on the climate, it’s difficult not to be a pessimist. But perhaps, if we pressure them enough, just this once they may exceed our expectations.

We are pleased to announce the Christmas fair will be running this year on the 4th December 11am - 3pm, there will be Live Music, a Christmas Market and a Christmas Rodeo Bull. This Tuesday, the Year 13 Textiles students visited Wheatfields Infants School. They had been invited to share their portfolios with the three Year 2 classes who had been involved in creating their own junk fashion outfits just before half term.  By presenting their work, our students explained the process of developing their individual projects from the initial inspiration of artists and designers, through drawing and recording to sampling in a range of textiles techniques and creating a refined outcome.  They answered lots of interesting questions from the children and were treated to a video of the class junk fashion show. Thank you to all the children in Year 2 for inviting us to your school and to our wonderful students for taking the time to speak to them. Our students really enjoyed the experience!

We would like to alert Year 11 students and parents to the Autumn open days at our local FE Colleges which are taking place in coming days. The colleges offer a wide range of vocational and technical courses which are really worth looking at as students start to consider their options after Year 11. There are usually further open days after Christmas or in Spring, but the events below offer a good chance to have a good look at this early stage.

FIRST AID When students feel unwell or get injured during the school day or if students need to take any medication during school hours they should go to Student Services. We are currently updating care plans for students who have medical conditions so please look out for an e:mail and we would be grateful if you can respond as soon as possible.

BOOK COVERS:  We ask that all exercise books are covered with the plastic wallets as this prolongs the life of the book and gives a plastic insert inside the cover, front and back, in which to put pieces of homework.  The 9 x 7 covers are 50p and the A4 covers are 75p and available from Student Services.

LOCKERS: We still have lockers available for Years 8-11 so please come to Student Services if you would like to rent one.  The rental is £5 per school year which is a lot less than having to replace a lost PE kit, device or coat.

RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT FOLDERS We sell Record of Achievement folders, embossed with the Sandringham logo at Student Services. They cost £6 and are a lovely way to keep all your achievements nicely presented. They have 16 clear inserts giving 32 sides

SAVERCARDS: Any students, between the ages of 11-18, who  travel by bus can apply for a Savercard online at hertsdirect.org/savercard .This entitles them to travel for half the adult fare at all times on local bus services.

LOST PROPERTY? We have a new Lost Property Cupboard at Student Services which students can access at all times to check for any lost items. For a quick return, please ensure all items are named. Please DO NOT bring in valuables, but if  necessary, please ensure they are safely locked away in your locker. *Please remember to name EVERYTHING!*

Not only do we have a fantastic range of fiction and non-fiction available to borrow in the LRC but we also have brilliant online resources, including Issues Online, Statistics, Review magazines and Britannica Encyclopedia.  

Our latest resource (which we are very lucky to have!) is JSTOR, a digital library of academic journals and scholarly publications, perfect for students who are researching projects or essays and who require secondary sources. Sandringham students can access JSTOR through MySandstorm, Library tab.  Journal articles can be saved, cited and downloaded and students can create their own workspace containing saved articles.  Along with the main search bar, JSTOR provides an advanced search option where students can use additional key words to help refine their search. There is also the facility to search by subject.  

If students require any help with research or using JSTOR they are welcome to pop into the LRC. Our friendly librarians are here to help. 

The English faculty have arranged for Quantum Theatre touring company to come into school to perform A Christmas Carol to Years 7 & 8 in the Sandpit Theatre. This seasonal classic is part of our KS3 curriculum so this is an excellent opportunity to see the story brought to life. Letters have been sent home this week via ParentMail with details of the full arrangements. Year 8 will see the production on Wednesday 1st December and Year 7 will see the production on Thursday 9th December. You will probably be very aware of the COP26 summit currently taking place in Glasgow. We have been focusing on this critical event in our theme for the week and whole school assembly. We are really keen to work as hard as possible as a school to play our part in addressing the global climate crisis and are continuing to work on our Sustainability Strategy. Part of this is a consideration of travel to school by both students and staff and we have just completed our whole school survey. The survey is almost identical to last year, with 22% students travelling by car, 63% walking and 3% cycling. We want to make it as easy and as safe as possible for students to walk or cycle, and interestingly, 13% of students stated that they would like to cycle to school. It would be great if you could consider more sustainable options if this is a possibility. And if you do have to use a car, please consider a drop off at least 500 metres from the school entrance, this would greatly improve congestion, safety and air quality around the site. Travel is one of the key elements of our everyday lives which contribute to emissions and is something that could make a huge difference if we can all think about sustainable improvements.

Leading up to COP26 and our theme week, a group of Year 12 students have been thinking about climate change and have helped to produce the materials being used with students. One of the group has written a piece on their behalf about COP and some of the core issues involved, included below. Hearing the voice of young people is crucial at this time as they seek to understand and offer solutions for the issues unfolding.

As you may already be aware, we are planning to go live with our new Site Security from Wednesday 10th November. This includes automated gates at vehicular and pedestrian entry points and card access to blocks. This is a significant project for the school which we have been working on since July and provides another arm to our safeguarding practices for students and staff during the schools core hours of 08:30 – 15:00.

From 08:30 – 15:00 on week days all gates to the front of the school and all school blocks will be locked, and students will be able to access the blocks using their access cards.  This means that all students will need to carry their access cards with them at all times. Students who arrive late to school will need to buzz in via the Main gates. Sixth Form Students will be able to access the site at any time during the day.

Any loss of student access cards must be reported immediately to Student Services in person or by email ns@mysandstorm.org.

This week, we celebrate the amazing work of our Assistant Libarian, Ms Critchley who has written not one but TWO fantastic children's books. Her first book 'Notes on My Family,' was nominated for a Carneige award and is the compelling, sharply observed story of a family in crisis told in an understated narrative voice of 13-year-old Lou, who is on the autism spectrum. Her second book, just out, is titled 'The Bear Who Sailed The Ocean on an Iceberg', and follows twelve year-old Patrick who is sent to put the Christmas decorations away in the garage where he comes across a huge polar bear in the chest freezer. The story weaves a tale of new friendships, self-reflection and adventure.

Both books are available in from our Learning Resource Centre, or you can buy them online at all good bookshops. Ms Critchley also supports students in the Creative Writing Club at school and we are incredibly proud of all that she has achieved both in and outside of school. Best of luck with the publication of the new book Ms Critchley!

The second of Mrs Nussain's daughter's Charity Walks took place over half term and the family have now beat their £3,000 target, raising an impressive total of £4,566 for Crohn's & Colitis Foundation and the AyaanJM Trust. Mrs Hussain said "Crohn's & Colitis is close to our heart because our son suffered from ulcerative colitis, and this was what painfully took him away from us last year. It aims to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life for children and adults affected, as well as fund basic research."

On Monday, Vancols visited to take the individual photographs for Years 8-11. Students were very well behaved and arrived promptly with smiles (mostly!) These photographs are now ready to view using the QR code on your proof card given to your child on the day.

If you have not done it yet, you can still view by scanning the QR code on your Proof and following the instructions. Van Cols also took the Year 8 form groups photographs in their form rooms (as they missed out on them last year) but unfortunately as the quality is not very good, they will be coming back at a later date this year to retake them.

Staff are busy making their nominations for WCSQM Student of the Year. These are students in any year whom we believe show all of the qualities it takes to be a World Class student and citizen and with so many amazing students here at Sandringham School, it will be a difficult task to decide the eventual winner. Internal nominations close on Friday 12th November and the shortlist will be decided after that to go to the final, competing against other schools. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on 6th December in Oxford and we look forward to sharing the news of short-listed nominees and winners shortly.

English Schools XC Regional Final @Verulamium Park

The U15’s played against Royal Masonic School in a very competitive match this week. This was their first match and the team gelled quickly with some excellent passing. The team scored a very well worked goal, clinically finished by Coral and created several other scoring opportunities. Sadly RMS converted more of their opportunities but the team enjoyed their match and should be very proud of their performance.

We have received confirmation that the Senior boys medley swim team are through to the National finals on Saturday 20th November at the Olympic Park. Great job boys.

The U12B netball team had a great game this week against Townsend winning 12 - 1! OPM - Aoife C & CPM - Gabriella V

The U14 B Netball team also had their first match of the season yesterday. They lost to a very strong STAHS team but great to see some new faces representing the school. OPM - Mimi G & CPM - Bea B.

A huge well done to the U14 girls football team for a fantastic display of football in the third round of ESFA national cup, beating the The Reach Free school 8-0 with 4 goals from Jasmine R, one cracking goal from the right wing from Abi K, 2 from Rebecca S (also scoring her penalty) and one from Eda P. We are hugely impressed with the teamwork and determination to make it to the last 64 schools in the competition! Player of the match Eda P.

The Y10 Boys Football team hosted Bishop’s Stortford High School for Boys in the U15 Wix (County Cup) on Monday in round 2 of the competition. After a win over Beaumont in the last round we wanted to ensure we gave ourselves a good chance of reaching the key rounds of this prestigious competition. We started very well getting an early goal through Noah B. The next 10minutes saw us assert ourselves on the game and we looked likely to score the next goal, however a defensive mistake saw our guests grab this before taking a 2-1 advantage into the break. An early 2nd half goal pulled the game back to 2-2 before we got ahead to take it to 3-2. With minutes remaining another lapse at the back allowed the away side a golden opportunity to bring the scores level to take the game to extra time. An early Charlie B goal again put us ahead, however for a final time we lost concentration and the game ended 4-4 taking it to a penalty shootout. 4 out of 5 of our penalty takers scored their kick with Finn H taking the final and victorious penalty with Vicente saving one. A home tie awaits us in the final 16 against either Rickmansworth or Chancellors.

The Y10B team were also in action on Wednesday afternoon in the ESFA B team National Cup. In our 2nd game of the year, predominantly because so few schools offer an U15 B side we hosted Van Dyke School from Bedfordshire. A large squad and quite a sizeable crowd gathered for what was to be an exceptional game of football at this standard and an opportunity for a large number of Y10s to represent the school this year. The first half was a battle and saw us have very few chances, with Callum B K and Toyoya McD defend stoutly. Tommy M and Max W were excellent together in the middle of midfield. With some changes and all 17 players getting onto the pitch, the second half continued in the same manner. With an even more open game the chances continued at both ends, Dan McK was exceptional in goal, making some key saves to keep Van Dyke out. With a number of one on ones saved they eventually took the lead 1-0. We had 2 golden opportunities at the other end to level the match, however Van Dyke sealed victory with a counter attack and a second. Well done to all the boys involved and good luck to our visitors in the next round.

Marking the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, the greatest exhibition ever held of his works took place in Rome. Exhibition on Screen was granted exclusive access to this once-in-a-lifetime show.  With over two hundred masterpieces, including paintings and drawings – over a hundred of which have been brought together for the first time – this major exhibition celebrates the life and work of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino.

More than just a painter, Raphael was one of the most extraordinary artists of the Renaissance but is often misunderstood or mythologised.  On the basis of this extraordinary exhibition in Rome, this film allows Raphael, for the first time, to be truly revealed.

Following Government guidelines, you must wear a face covering while attending The SandPit Theatre and must present a valid NHS COVID Pass or proof of a Negative Lateral Flow Test if aged over 18, unless you are exempt as stated in these guidelines. If you do not wear a mask or do not have a valid NHS Covid Pass/Lateral Flow Test result, you will be refused entry and your ticket will be forfeited.

Our Bar will be open during these performances for drinks and snacks but please note we will only be accepting card payments. Alcohol is available for sale 30 minutes before the shows begin.
