It has been a fantastic start to the week for Year 7 who are finding their feet around campus and taking part in a variety of lesson activities, from designing trainers to having philosophical discussions. Congratulations to 7S who were the winners of last week’s year group challenge. Who will win the competition this week?

We are really pleased to have welcomed 255 new students to the Sixth Form last week, including a large number students joining us from local schools. Both year groups have made a really good start, with Year 12 getting used to sixth form studies and Year 13 starting to really focus on their UCAS and apprenticeship applications. As we can’t physically hold the Year 12 and Year 13 Parent Information Evenings this year, we will be sending out recorded presentations to parents/ carers in coming days. We look forward to working with all students in the months ahead!

Form tutors will be handing out proofs of the individual Year 7 photographs in the next few days.

You can either order these online or or return the pack to your form tutor by Tuesday 22nd September.

Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, no form photographs were taken but we hope that this may be possible later in the year, along with updated photographs for Years 8-11 which were postponed from the Summer Term.

The Whole School Photograph planned for this September will also now take place in September 2021

It is lovely to see our students back and asking for books to read. Due to Covid restrictions, we cannot allow browsing in the Library, but if students go on MySandstorm > Accessit Learning Resource Centre they can see our online catalogue. If you click on a book, you can reserve it and we will email you when it is ready for collection.

Please return any books that you have read since lockdown, or over summer, as soon as possible.

We also welcome a new member to the LRC team, Miss Critchley. Along with the rest of the team, she will be able to help with any queries that you have.

The music faculty will be resuming some of our regular music groups from Monday 14th September. We are working hard to ensure that we can get music making going again in a safe way and have devised a careful timetable to ensure that year group bubbles are maintained.

There are individual timetables in the music faculty which show which weeks each year group will attend rehearsals. Below is a summary of our groups and would really like to encourage new year 7s especially to join in with Sandringham Band (for instrumentalists) or Junior Choir (for singers).

Congratulations to the following students for passing music examinations:

• Freddie P Grade 7 Singing Distinction Grade 7 Bassoon Merit.

Also, a huge congratulations to Zac P in Year 11 for his win in the 12-14 years category of the BBC Young Composer of the Year competition. This is a huge achievement and a very exciting prospect for Zac (please see more details in the Student Spotlight section!)

Every week the Maths department publish a puzzle for you to try! You can find the puzzle in the Sandprint or on the screens around school. For every entry you will receive 1 housepoint, if you answer correctly you will win 2 housepoints! If you are the fastest person to answer the puzzle correctly then you will win 5 housepoints! Congratulations to Zac P in Year 11 for winning his age category in the prestigious BBC Young Composer of the Year competition 2020. This is an annual competition for 12 to 18 year olds across the UK who create their own original music.

Winners will now participate in a tailored development programme working with a mentor composer on a project with the BBC Concert Orchestra which will be performed and broadcast in a special young composers concert at the BBC Proms in 2021.

Zac said ‘During lockdown I worked on a piece of music to be entered for the BBC Young Composer of the Year Competition 2020. I really enjoyed challenging and pushing myself throughout the writing and recording process but I didn’t expect to win! When I found out I was one of the winners is was so excited. This is such a huge opportunity for me, as composition and music production are such a big part of my life.‘

Well done on all of your hard work Zac. We look forward to hearing about more of his successes in the future and seeing the final performance at the BBC Proms in 2021.

The Library is named after Malorie Blackman (OBE) whom we believe has shown Integrity through her exploration of social and ethical issues in her writing. Early Life:

• Malorie was born in Clapham on 8th February 1962 to parents from Barbados.
• Her critically acclaimed novel, Nought and Crosses, employs the setting of a fictional dystopia to explore racism.
• She held the position of children’s laureate from 2013 to 2015 and now writes literature and television drama for children and young adults exploring social and ethical issues.
• She has written more than 60 children's books and her work has won over 15 awards
• In her personal time, Blackman enjoys playing the piano, composing, playing computer games and writing poetry.

Welcome back to a new term! We are excited to be welcoming you all back. Through September and October, we have lots of exiting screenings coming to The SandPit. Including, 42nd Street the Musical, Kinky Boots, Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, and The King & I. We look forward to opening our doors again safely and to see you all again.
