Headlines

Our first full week back has gone well, and students have settled quickly into the new routines for keeping safe. Last night we held our first Virtual Open Evening with a Live Stream and talks from Dr Creaby, the Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl and two year 8 students. In the absence of Open Morning Tours we hope that it was informative to prospective parents in showing the ethos of the school. If you would like to view the broadcast, you can do so on our relaunched website www.sandringham.herts.sch.uk

We were aware from the start that adjustments may need to be made, either due to national guidelines or our own analysis of how to fine-tune systems. The adjustments made this Thursday, we hope, will further improve life at Sandringham and allow us to continue to deliver the full-range of curriculum entitlement. As you may have read, a number of local schools have had to send students home on advice from Public Health England and whilst at the time of writing, this has not been the case here, we need to be realistic and assume that at some point we may have a confirmed case of Covid-19 and will need to respond appropriately.

We will follow the advice of PHE, and anticipate that in the first instance if a student is confirmed positive, the entire year group ‘bubble’ would have to work from home using our VLC, rather than be in school. Potentially, this would be for a two-week period. We would contact you immediately via parent mail and also send a covering text, should this be necessary to give you as much notice as possible. I am sure you appreciate that we will have to move very quickly in such circumstances.

Students have embraced the new systems of wearing masks in corridors really well and this will now be our new norm for the foreseeable future. What we ask now is that students move to reusable masks that are cleaned regularly to avoid mass waste of disposable masks and issues with disposal. There will be a period of settling in but if you are able to obtain a cloth face mask (plain) that would be greatly appreciated. Sandringham colours are Red, White and Black and we would like to encourage students to go for these colours. Red would be my preference; far more cheerful than black. If any student does not have a mask they will have to go to student services and buy one from the school. We will log their name and this will be a one-off option. The school is not set up to be a regularly supplier to those who forget masks I am afraid.

I have spent some time walking the school this week and the learning atmosphere is back to its usual standard with really well-planned and delivered lessons and students enjoying what they are doing. It also seems that they have built on their learning since March through the VLC which enables us to move forward with the curriculum here without too much going back over previous material.

It is difficult to predict the future but it is likely that the herd-immunity threshold will be reached at some point this year and that, coupled with a reasonably effective vaccine will allow us to move to a position of maintaining an open school for all students all of the time.

It has been a fantastic start to the week for Year 7 who are finding their feet around campus and taking part in a variety of lesson activities, from designing trainers to having philosophical discussions. Congratulations to 7S who were the winners of last week’s year group challenge. Who will win the competition this week?

Are you excited for extracurricular activities to start? We thank you for your patience while we sort the logistics of how we can offer as much as possible to all of Year 7. Find out more in our assembly next week. Follow us on Twitter! Username= SandClassof2020

Sixth Form News

We are really pleased to have welcomed 255 new students to the Sixth Form last week, including a large number students joining us from local schools. Both year groups have made a really good start, with Year 12 getting used to sixth form studies and Year 13 starting to really focus on their UCAS and apprenticeship applications. As we can’t physically hold the Year 12 and Year 13 Parent Information Evenings this year, we will be sending out recorded presentations to parents/ carers in coming days. We look forward to working with all students in the months ahead!

Year 7 Photos

Form tutors will be handing out proofs of the individual Year 7 photographs in the next few days.

You can either order these online or or return the pack to your form tutor by Tuesday 22nd September.

Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, no form photographs were taken but we hope that this may be possible later in the year, along with updated photographs for Years 8-11 which were postponed from the Summer Term.

The Whole School Photograph planned for this September will also now take place in September 2021

Library News

It is lovely to see our students back and asking for books to read. Due to Covid restrictions, we cannot allow browsing in the Library, but if students go on MySandstorm > Accessit Learning Resource Centre they can see our online catalogue. If you click on a book, you can reserve it and we will email you when it is ready for collection.

Please return any books that you have read since lockdown, or over summer, as soon as possible.

We also welcome a new member to the LRC team, Miss Critchley. Along with the rest of the team, she will be able to help with any queries that you have.

Extra-Curricular - Music

The music faculty will be resuming some of our regular music groups from Monday 14th September. We are working hard to ensure that we can get music making going again in a safe way and have devised a careful timetable to ensure that year group bubbles are maintained.

There are individual timetables in the music faculty which show which weeks each year group will attend rehearsals. Below is a summary of our groups and would really like to encourage new year 7s especially to join in with Sandringham Band (for instrumentalists) or Junior Choir (for singers).

Student Spotlight

Congratulations to Zac P in Year 11 for winning his age category in the prestigious BBC Young Composer of the Year competition 2020. This is an annual competition for 12 to 18 year olds across the UK who create their own original music.

Winners will now participate in a tailored development programme working with a mentor composer on a project with the BBC Concert Orchestra which will be performed and broadcast in a special young composers concert at the BBC Proms in 2021.

Zac said ‘During lockdown I worked on a piece of music to be entered for the BBC Young Composer of the Year Competition 2020. I really enjoyed challenging and pushing myself throughout the writing and recording process but I didn’t expect to win! When I found out I was one of the winners is was so excited. This is such a huge opportunity for me, as composition and music production are such a big part of my life.‘

Well done on all of your hard work Zac. We look forward to hearing about more of his successes in the future and seeing the final performance at the BBC Proms in 2021.
