Headlines

There are two significant events to report on this week.

The first is our Remembrance Service held on Monday at 10.50 a.m. for the entire school community on the tennis/netball courts. The service helped us all reflect and remember those who have been affected by conflicts and involved two of our senior students, Elena (reading ‘In Flanders Fields’) and Yasmin (playing the last post). We also had many students dressed in their uniforms (scouts, guides, regiments) and some of these were involved in laying the wreaths. As mentioned last week, in addition to the service, Ms Kelly and the Art Faculty constructed an amazing field of poppies at the front of the school. The combined impact of these, together with the Remembrance assemblies last week delivered by Ms Edwards Head of History and Politics allowed us all to consider the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Relationships.

The second key event this week has been the whole school show, Harry Potter, and the Cursed Child. An amazing amount of work has gone in to prepare for the show and on Wednesday afternoon, Year 7 watched the dress rehearsal. They came out buzzing with excitement, all wanting to be in future shows! They had a brilliant time and you can read two of their reviews further down in the Sandprint. The show opened officially on Thursday evening and is sold out across all four performances. I would like to thank Miss Hardacre and all the staff involved for working on this production and congratulate all the young people involved for their stunning performances. Well done everyone.

Tickets have now been released for Velocity which will take place in February 2025. This is always a fantastic showcase of all our dance talent here at Sandringham school and the theme this year is The Oscars. We are sure it will be another event not to be missed and you can buy tickets here. You will notice an update on the Gambia trip in the newsletter. I would like to thank Miss England who now coordinates this trip for all her work preparing and organising the fundraising. You can meet some of the students going to Gambia at the Christmas fair on Saturday, 7 December.

Next week Year 11 begin their trial examinations and  I am sure these will go well - I wish them every success. We also have the Autumn Concert and several exciting Science/Dance trips. Finally, in two weeks’ time on 27/28 November we have pastoral review meetings. Hopefully by now you have all made your appointments. The meetings for pastoral review are online and we then have an Occasional Day on Friday 29th November where students are not in school. If you have any feedback on the arrangements for PRD, please send them to the school.

Have a lovely weekend, everybody.

CHRISTMAS FAIR NEWS

Fo$S are still looking for help with their Christmas Fair being held on 7th December 11am - 3pm at Sandringham. This event has always been popular with parents, students and local residents; it features a lovely Christmas market to do some Christmas shopping, tombolas and interactive games for the students, plus festive food and drinks. It promises to be a great day, but we need your help!

Volunteers are needed to help cook, serve food and drinks, run the tombola, plus help clear up afterwards.  If you can spare an hour or more of your time you can sign up through the link below, which splits the jobs by time slots volunteersignup.org/AHAQY

Donations for Tombola and Raffle:  All donations of sweets, chocolates or drinks would be very gratefully received.  You can either drop off your donations to the main reception (please note: if donating alcoholic drinks they must be brought in by an adult), or you can donate to our tombola money pool and FO$S will purchase items to go on the tombola. You can do this here. Any prize donations from companies would also be most welcome.

Face painters wanted:  Unfortunately our usual face painter is unavailable. So we are looking for someone who has the equipment and could run the stall. If you are interested please email  friendsofsandringhamschool@gmail.com or contact Tara on 07921001591

DRAMA NEWS

We were delighted to share our performance of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child with Year 7 on Wednesday. The Year 7's were a fantastic audience and their feedback was very helpful before the final shows this week. After the show, we received an array of excellent reviews from Year 7's and we are pleased to share two excellent reviews below.

Isla C: This was a brilliant, magical experience, the cast really out did themselves and the weeks of practice really paid off. Brilliant for any age, maybe not for under-fives. I will give the show 5 stars. The graphics, music and lighting were incredible, nothing I wouldn't change to be perfect. The wand dance and Death Eater dance were wonderful. The choreography was outstanding. Bravo to anyone who thought of the incredible moves. Harry Potter was a very good look-alike and Dumbledore was something I would never forget. The twist in Act Two was brilliant, I won't include any spoilers, don't worry. Well done to whoever did the lighting it must have been very tricky and whoever did the fireworks please remember whoever is reading this, FIRE IS DANGEROUS !!! P.s - thank you to everyone who put their time and lives into this performance.

Deni  7N: I really enjoyed the show. It was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. All the effects and lights made it look really good and everyone knew what was going on and they knew all their lines. The set was made really well and I think that learning the lines, building the set and managing all the effects would be really hard but the crew managed to do it perfectly. I also really liked how they used the things around them, like when they were doing the scene with Dumbledore they used the frame from the lights at the top of the set. Overall the show was AMAZING, the acting was great even if the actors made a mistake they'd fix it like nothing ever happened and they performed really well with each other.

THEME WEEK- KINDNESS

The whole school theme this week was ‘World Kindness day’. This was to celebrate the interventional celebration of World Kindness Day which took place on Wednesday the 13th November. The day was first established in 1998 as a means to encourage acts of kindness across the globe, and prove how these sweet gestures can have a greater positive impact on individuals and communities. As a school we are dedicated to building a culture of kindness, and students are regularly encouraged to not only be kind in their daily lives, but to engage in random acts of kindness with the school community. This week students received an uplifting assembly from some of our Sixth Form students, in which they collated a range of examples of how people can be affected by small acts of kindness that are shown for them, as well as sharing examples of how being kind can have a genuine positive impact on not only the people who are being helped, but also the person who is being kind.

STEM NEWS

The first project of KS3 STEM Club came to an exciting end on Monday with our rocket launch day. Students launched their rockets using a foot pump to increase the air pressure inside the bottle until the water was forced out, causing the rocket to go flying!

Our next project will be working on a series of smaller challenges to plan for surviving a zombie invasion! Sign up on SOCS if you’d like to join us!

BOOK OF THE WEEK- The Ivies, by Alexa Donne

Everyone knows the Ivies: the most coveted universities in the United States. Far more important are the Ivies. The Ivies at Claflin Academy, that is. Five girls with the same mission: to get into the Ivy League by any means necessary. I would know. I'm one of them. We disrupt class ranks, club leaderships, and academic competitions...amongst other things. We improve our own odds by decreasing the fortunes of others. Because hyper-elite competitive college admissions is serious business. And in some cases, it's deadly.

Juliette D in 7F has read the book and says, “I have just finished reading this book and it is incredible! It is very similar to the trilogy A good girls guide to murder, so if you enjoyed that you'd definitely enjoy this! Ruthless, clever, thrilling and Twisty, I couldn't put it down!”

Mrs S Thomas

WORD OF THE WEEK TRANSLATED

FRENCH: Le mot de la semaine: judicieux

GERMAN: Das Wort der Woche: umsichtig

SPANISH: La palabra de la semana: juicioso

Thinking Question:

Firstly, thank you to our native speakers in the MFL faculty and Frau Kranz in our German exchange school for this week’s translations. The French and Spanish words focus on being wise and making smart choices showing a clear link to the Latin word judicium  . By contrast, the German word incorporates the word ‘sicht’ meaning vision. Would this suggest German speakers use this word to show the importance of thinking ahead and seeing the bigger picture?

Mrs E Kincaid

WORD OF THE WEEK

J is for ... judicious [adjective]

Definition: Having, showing, or done with good judgement or sense.

Example: The department made a judicious use of public investment.

Synonyms: Wise, Thoughtful, Considerate

Antonyms: Careless, Inattentive, Irrational

Etymology: From the Latin judicium  meaning ‘judgement’
